Ashanti Files, RN, BSN

Poet, Author, Registered Nurse & Founder of
Writers of Oya
Writers of Oya began with a desire to provide mental health support to teens. Since 2019, this program has grown and so have I. When not actively working with a cohort of teens, facilitators and myself host workshops to provide resources and support to organizations in need of resilience building tools and mental health programming.

I was named the Urbana Poet Laureate for the year 2021 and also Martha's vineyard Institute of Creative Writing Voices of Color Fellow in 2021. In 2023, I became An Academy of American Poets Poet Laureate Fellow primarily for the work being done with Writers of Oya. I am currently working to achieve my Masters of Science in Psychiatric/ Mental Health while traveling regionally and competing on the Ghost Poetry Show Slam team.
